Our cuisine is known worldwide, and immortalized in hundreds of paintings.
But we also have an impressive creative gastronomy that enjoys far less visibility.
So… what if we bring both worlds together?
OLD WOMAN FRYING EGGS
Oil on canvas, 1618.
Diego Velázquez.
Seville.
This is one of Diego Velázquez’s most emblematic early works, painted in 1618. The painting depicts a woman cooking eggs in a simple domestic interior, accompanied by everyday utensils and foodstuffs. Through this seemingly simple scene, Velázquez demonstrates his mastery of light and detail, capturing with precision the textures of the objects, the woman’s skin, and the reflections of natural light entering through the window.
This Baroque still life not only represents everyday life but also anticipates the development of the artist’s style: intense realism, sensitivity to human gestures, and a balanced composition that blends simplicity and depth. The work is considered a classic example of how Velázquez fused portraiture, still life, and genre painting, revealing the artistic value of the ordinary. Today, it is housed in the National Gallery of Scotland and continues to be admired for its ability to transform a domestic scene into a universal work of art.
PABLO VEGA & PABLO DOMÍNGUEZ
Better known as “Los Pablos”.
Ménade Restaurant.
Málaga.
Pablo Vega, a Málaga-born chef with an outstanding career, including a Michelin star at the age of 24, embodies the creative side of the duo. His cuisine is characterized by reinterpreting traditional flavours, playing with textures and colours, and consistently relying on local products combined with contemporary techniques.
Pablo Domínguez, with a more discreet public profile, contributes the technical dimension: process control, precision, organization, and impeccable execution. He structures and optimizes Vega’s ideas, transforming them into coherent, reproducible, and efficient dishes.
Together, they combine creativity and discipline, balancing artistry with technical rigor. This complementarity forms the foundation of the style of their restaurant, Ménade, where their two visions merge to offer signature cuisine with a distinctly Málaga identity—solid, aesthetic, and expertly executed.
